Maharishi's many euphemisms for "God"

The TM organization has for almost a half-century now denied the religious nature of its methods and doctrine, almost to the point of absurdity. The fact of the matter is that almost all of the TM promotional material - books, websites, the content of introductory lectures - is littered with various synonyms for, what people in much of the world call “God.” More specifically, the underlying system is that of a Vedic, or Hindu, cosmology, and there’s a central concept of supreme divinity or ultimate reality in the TM subculture that they repeat under many alternate names.

From a TM organization, in India, video. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
behind Maharishi and his guru, Brahmananda Saraswati.

That supreme being in Hinduism is a triad of deities known as the Trimūrti: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the maintainer, and Shiva the destroyer. Direct references to the Trimūrti are not common in TM culture, but they can be found, as in the video image above, and as in this excerpt of an address given by Maharishi in 2007 referencing a phrase that’s contained in the puja that’s the central ritual of TM instruction, in which the Trimūrti are mentioned in Sanskrit. I’ve emphasized the relevant parts here:

We are fortunate to perform Puja to Guru Dev because in Guru Dev we have the reality of Krishna—reality of Total Knowledge is embodiment of Total Knowledge. "Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnur, Guru Devo Maheshvarah, Guruh Sakshat Param Brahma, Tasmai Sri Gurave Namah." Guru Brahma—Guru is the creator. Guru Vishnu—Guru is the maintainer. Guru Devo Maheshvarah—Guru is eternal Shiva, absolute silence. And Guru Sakshat Param Brahma, and Guru is the summation of the three, diversity, and unity. Tasmai Sri Guruve Namah. That is why we bow down to Guru Dev. Bowing down to Guru Dev is in essence, in reality, subjecting ourself to that eternal unified state which is the be-all and end-all of existence.

the end of playing the game

TM: religion, cult, science?
Sure, why not!
It's how you play the game, plain and simple.

An old-time friend wanted to know why I, such a devoted, committed, true-believer (in the old days), quit TM. When I said I began to feel that I was living a lie, he declared a whiff of bovine excrement. He was right.

It was so much more than that. But the words that told the story were short in coming, suddenly. Hard to believe, I know, given my propensity for rants.

What was really going on? what had really gone on?

Some folks find that TM is ok, lets them feel rested and lets them go about their business feeling free-er ... ok, less stressed. Is that a lie, too? Mahesh said, I thought quite rightly, that we judge the effectiveness of meditation by our results in activity. I don't know any TMers any more. Haven't met one in years. Are they good, kind, effective, happy people? Does anyone know? Or is expecting to find good, kind, effective, happy people anywhere a contemporary myth and fantasy?

Unfortunately, like drivers on the highway, we only notice the ones who cause accidents, vehicular trouble. Just as unfortunately, I met lots of TM casualties. To me, they were "proof" that there was something absolutely NOT universal about Mahesh's panacea. Something whiffy about the TMO party-line.

When I compare the true-believing big-wig organizational whoo-has on YouTube (including the head whoo-ha, David Lynch) I wonder just who Maheshism is benefiting, other than whoever is in charge of Mahesh's bank account. I don't see and hear solid-based logic and clarity. I hear proselytising and belief-based fantasy. Perhaps I am jaded (oh, horrors). Yet, I think that is not the case. Logic is logic and I hear alternative-logic, alternative-facts and lofty "spiritual" crap-speak.

Any ideas? experiences, commentaries?

Friends tell me that Leigh Remini's TV episodes on Scientology are informative, worthwhile watching. I shy away from even clarifying-cult talk; it's just too full of the old days, somehow. Will there, ever/someday, be a post-TM-version of Leigh Remmini's courage, clarity and forthcoming? I hope, but do not restrain my respirations.

Mahesh envied Hubbard (his apparent success, anyway) and I guess, like the current U. S. President, tried to outdo what he considered a rival. I see a lot of similarity between Mahesh (the one I knew in private) and the very public current President. One shudders at the thought of what goes on in private in the oval office one hears so little about! but that's probably another story inappropriate for this Blog.

So, what are current TMers like, the Fairfield variety, the ordinary other-than-Fairfield variety, the run-of the mill variety? do they talk like the YouTube variety? are they really successful, skilled in action and so on?

I, a curious reader, want to know.

Changes in TM Teachings; Religion; Videotapes

A few of my recent random thoughts on TM that I'd like to share with readers.

Random thought #1.  Changes in TM belief system over the years:

Example A:  In the early days, the giggling guru told us to judge the value of TM not by the subjective experience during the meditation, but by improvements in one's life.  But recent emails from the TM organization (TMO) inviting people to attend courses often rave about the "deep meditations" and "blissful experience" one can have during these courses, as if that were a worthwhile end in itself.

Example B: The TMO used to publish studies of dubious accuracy showing that as more and more people practice TM, the quality of life in that vicinity continues to improve.  But recent emails from the TMO emphasize what perilous times we are living in, and how we need to "keep our numbers of meditators up" to prevent calamity.  They have replaced their message of "We are successfully creating Heaven on Earth" with fear-inducing "Danger is around us everywhere, and only we can stop it through ever-more intense devotion to the TMO."

Random thought #2.  Mahesh used to say that "No matter what your religion, TM will make you a better member of your faith.  If you are Christian, it will make you a better Christian; if you are a Buddhist, it will make you a better Buddhist," etc.  I am asking for reader feedback -- did TM make you a better member of your faith?  Or a worse member of your faith?  How so?

Random thought #3.  The audiotapes and videotapes featuring Maharishi or his followers that I had to listen to when I was on courses -- I found them anywhere from (occasionally) interesting to (often) excrutiatingly boring.  What was your reaction to the tapes?

Yes, We Are No Religion, part 2013

The TM organization (TMO) continues to insist that the TM technique is not a religion.  This may or may not be true of the technique itself.  However, if a TM meditator learns the advanced TMO technique known as the "TM-Sidhis program," the TMO calls him/her a "Sidha," and may send them emails like the one below.  From the following email, I conclude that the TMO is trying to propagate a Hindu-like religion.  What do you think?

The TMO sent this email to a TM-Free reader, who was kind enough to forward it to TMF.  Thank you!  Readers are invited to send us anything which may be of interest to other TMF readers.  I have edited the email for brevity:

The Sanskrit word Mahalakshmi means “great wealth.” On this auspicious day we enliven the specific values of creative intelligence in nature that bestow prosperity, growth, wealth, and affluence; and eliminate poverty and remove obstacles and weaknesses in individual and collective consciousness.
Jai Guru Dev
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 According to Wikipedia:
(1)  Dhavantari is an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu
(2) Hanuman is a Hindu monkey-god
(3) Mahalakshmi is a Hindu goddess

Do you think the TMO is misleading the public?  If yes, do you think it is doing so intentionally or unintentionally?  Why do you think it is doing that?  How do you feel about that?

Is it a religion, or a dessert topping?

One of the more stupefying features of TM is its vague claim of not being a religion: "The Transcendental Meditation technique is not a religion or philosophy." But an overview of everything connected with TM practice - the organization and the people who teach TM - suggests something completely different. Religious aspects are woven throughout this entire enterprise that claims to be "scientific" in nature. In fact, the core doctrine of the organization which teaches TM is that of a religion. This religious organization holds that Transcendental Meditation and other practices in the program have an effect on the individual and society through means that can only be described as religious. The TM organization's stated goals of global transformation have many similarities to those of other religious faiths.

The TM movement's denial of its own obvious religiosity is absurd. As my title suggests, it brings to mind this great Saturday Night Live sketch. "New Shimmer's a floor wax and a dessert topping!"

"Shimmer Floor Wax", Saturday Night Live, January 10, 1976

"Tastes terrific... and just look at that shine!" But, as with Chevy Chase's rendition of the somewhat sleazy pitchman selling a surrealistic, self-contradictory product, something doesn't add up when it comes to the TM teacher's standard pitch concerning the relationship between TM and religious belief.

Critics over the years have pointed out that the religious nature of TM was proven by the decision in a Federal court case, Malnak v. Yogi, decades ago (1977). Yet promoters continue to insist that Transcendental Meditation is not a religious activity and may be implemented in public schools.

The following essay analyzes how the words and behaviors of the people and organizations promoting Transcendental Meditation mark it as a religious program. This is clearly demonstrated by current websites and online videos produced by the TM movement.

Making Sense of a Nonsensical Movement

The following is something I wrote earlier tonight as part of some private correspondence. It might be helpful in trying to make sense of the TM movement's nonsense, particularly when it comes to the constant insistence that TM is "not a religion." The truth of the matter is not easily explained, in large part because of inconsistent concepts as to what a religion is.

  1. The most accurate, broad self-characterization of "Maharishi Mahesh Yogi" and the organization he established ("Global Country of World Peace") is as a means of Vedic revivalism. "The complete theoretical and practical knowledge of the Veda and its profound significance for life has been revived and understood in a scientific framework by Maharishi’s Vedic Science and Technology..." which can be found in exactly this language here and here, and similarly elsewhere.

  2. While TM devotees attempt to separate "Vedic" from "Hindu," there is very little to support this separation, and what's effectively a simple word substitution. TM devotees often claim that their particular interpretation of ancient texts that they call "Veda" is the pure form of knowledge from which later traditions they consider corrupted, such as Hinduism, were derived. These assertions are evidently unique to those associated with the TM organization, and allied religious groups in India.  All that is being sold as "Vedic" under the TM organization's auspices, that was not reinterpreted, misinterpreted or completely manufactured by Maharishi and other group leaders over time, traces to the spiritual and cultural traditions of India that are usually referred to as "Hindu." However, much of it has certain unusual twists or doctrines unique to the organization. Among these is a group of males wearing crowns and white outfits who've paid 1 million USD to become "rajas" as part of a so-called "Global Government," and who may run the organization.

  3. Likewise, there is no support for describing any part of the Vedas as "scientific." The attempt to draw connections and parallels between aspects of the Vedas, Vedic or Hindu practices, and Western scientific concepts has been common among Hindus for decades if not centuries, and continues as part of the TM organization doctrine. There is no scientific support for such claims made by TM devotees. As an example, the organization has long claimed direct association between Vedic concepts and those of quantum mechanics, put forward by longtime TM devotee and American leader ("raja") John Hagelin. While Hagelin is a physicist, his pronouncements of this nature have gained zero support from others.

  4. Supremacy of the Vedas, and Vedic practices, is foundational to the TM organization's purpose, as it says at the bottom of this page under the title "Everything Should Be Vedic." This would include the folding of other cultures and other religious practices into a system in which Vedic practice is supreme. The gaining of alleged positive benefits at every level (personal/social/national/planetary), including the "world peace"  often referred to by proponents including David Lynch (and internally as "Heaven on Earth" or Sat Yuga), is the motivator for the organization's attempt to popularize "Vedic Knowledge." The products and services sold by the organization, of which Transcendental Meditation is usually one's initial contact, are the actual mechanism by which "Vedic Knowledge" is disseminated. Unlike TM, on which the organization has focused its efforts to obtain scientific research on which to base its claims of efficacy, there is very little, if any, research on any of the other product categories, listed at the bottom of this page.

  5. Note that in this description, things that are part of implementing this "Vedic knowledge" are practices, not beliefs.  There is no profession of faith or anything of that sort which many Westerners associate with "religion." It is in this way that TM and all the Vedic products are similar to consumer products, in that they are sold as being effective, but the buyer need not know, or care, or even believe in, the specifics of why or how they are effective. (Do you know or care why your stick of deodorant works?) The key activity becomes marketing, and everything to support the claims of efficacy in the marketing, which is why the organization seems obsessed with getting any possible support, no matter how shaky, preliminary, or unreplicated it may be from the scientific community it can possibly dig up. Incessant name-dropping of celebrities who sign on to the program is also part of this process.

  6. From the TM organization's view, the whole point is to recruit individuals into a system of practices, that are believed to be a correct, pure implementation of "Vedic knowledge," to bring about "Heaven on Earth." While prospective meditators are told in introductory lectures that the ultimate purpose is to bring about world peace, they are never clear about the details of how that's supposed to happen. World peace in this system is brought about, not through individual, personal development, but through adherence to Vedic "knowledge" in every detail across all aspects of life through the purchase and use of the organization's products and services by many people in aggregate. It is at this point where involvement with TM takes the form of participation in a religious enterprise without knowledge or consent; while the individual meditator may not need to believe anything, and may even deny belief, may even think everything about the organization is completely bogus, and in the practice of meditation (the introductory product) may not be doing anything even recognizable as a religious practice, the motivations of the teachers and marketers of TM are obviously in a different realm and of a different nature, are based in a belief system that holds to unusual notions of causation that are not clearly disclosed, and that would be considered by many to be religious, although unorthodox if not completely bizarre by Western standards.

There is no rational or scientific basis for the claim that the more people adopt these products, the more likely "Heaven on Earth" will come about, in the same way that, to cover some of the more outrageous claims made for its other products, an east-facing home of proper Vedic proportions will give its owner health and wealth, spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars to have someone in India perform a ritual would likewise give the buyer health and wealth, or that bouncing on foam rubber while thinking certain thoughts... the list goes on like this for a while.  These more advanced products carry obvious spiritual or religious connotations, while the organization continues to insist that their basis is entirely "scientific."

Meanwhile, the simple practice of meditation does provide some benefit for some people. For some, the initial benefit serves as validation for other claims made by the organization for its other products, and becomes part of the sales pitch for deeper involvement with its programs, and continues the intended intake path.

Where the TM Program Clearly Resembles a Religious Faith

Krishna, as seen in the TM movement's
"Heaven is Descending" animated video
Anyone who's spent any time examining TM is probably familiar with the usual outlines of this sort of discussion. Is TM religious in nature if not itself a religious practice? The usual response is that critics and non-devotees point out the obvious - the pervasive use of Hindu/Vedic imagery and practices at all levels of the TM organization, right down to the elements of the initiation ceremony and TM mantras. The response by TM devotees is perpetual denial of those same obvious features, or to summarize very briefly, a futile attempt to recast "Hindu" to "Vedic," and "Vedic" as somehow "scientific."

I'm going to set aside all of that well-worn territory for the moment and talk about something a bit different. This is the aspect of religious faith that is both about the creation and perpetuation of a religious institution, and the role of "faith" in sustaining that process.

How do you perpetuate a religious faith? First and foremost, a group of people must be conditioned to stick with that faith no matter what. It doesn't matter whether there is any concrete, repeatable evidence to support the beliefs associated with that faith; the true believer sticks with the faith. It doesn't matter if those beliefs are shown to be outright false, outrageous, backward, harmful, or the rough equivalent of insisting, despite all the readily available evidence in a modern world, that the world is flat.

The interesting thing about the creation of such a group is that often the window of opportunity to do that can be rather small, in two ways. First, the members of the group are often recruited while young, while teenagers or young adults, and recruitment depends on obtaining access to pools of young people who may serve as candidates for conversion. The likelihood of conversion falls off as the prospect ages. Candidates must at least be those who suppress the "you must be nuts" sort of response to the initial presentation of the tenets of the faith and be willing to proceed, even if they harbor doubts about it. Second, broad cultural influences that supported the basic tenets of the faith, which might be relatively transitory in society as a whole, can be exploited to support recruitment for people to build an institution that will outlast those cultural influences, surviving while those elements of the surrounding culture, as they were, become a fond memory of the distant past.

Now, having written that, I can hear some grumbling out there at the words, "tenets of the faith." It sounds so Christian, Western, so inapplicable to what TM is, or its promoters say it is, about. But the tenets are in some ways not explicitly pointed to as tenets; they are the figures of speech, sometimes metaphors, that are used over and over by those who've in some way made it their life's work to perpetuate Transcendental Meditation.

One that comes to mind is in the words of Mike Love, who once was recorded for a radio program distributed by the TM movement. I can't offhand remember the rest of what he said in that program, but what stuck is four words: "just by simply meditating." It plays with the complicated relationship between what goes on in our minds and our imaginations, and the act of actually doing, of actually making a dent in our physical surroundings.

The TM faith says two things at the same time. It first says, meditate, then do. It then says that meditation has some magical direct effect upon the environment through some vaguely-described mechanism that exists outside any known and generally recognized scientific theory. These two things exist in tension, but there's an element of, you can have your cake and eat it, too. You continue doing whatever it is you're doing, while meditating and changing the world by exerting very little effort at all.

This is, of course, in the context of a grand plan; they even used to call it, back in the '70's, a "World Plan," fairly obvious to most since at the time the TM teaching organization was called the "World Plan Executive Council." In glowing terms, such as this from the beginning of "The TM Book," TM is, by implication, held to be more important than almost anything else: "The Transcendental Meditation program changes the quality of life from poverty, emptiness, and suffering to abundance, fulfillment, and happiness." This is the kind of broad claim that's generally only heard from the devotees of a religious faith.

All this sort of language was very much part of the context of the late 1960's and early 1970's. It fit right in with popular culture, attracted celebrities, and resonated among relatively affluent, and often young, Westerners with time and wealth, as it was basically a call to "change the world" by taking 45 minutes of individual leisure time each day and doing nothing with it. What a deal! Today, it just sounds rather quaint, particularly when you keep in mind that the TM movement has had 40 years or more to support such grand claims with overwhelming supportive evidence - not another set of flimsy preliminary studies, surveys and promotional videos - and it consistently comes up empty.

This week, we're about to see another round of celebrity-laced promotions for Transcendental Meditation organized by the David Lynch Foundation. Lists of alleged "experts" supporting the programs, who'll appear at these events, are circulating. The thing that strikes me is the degree to which many of these "experts" are so alike. Most are over 50 years old, were initiated into the TM program as teenagers or young adults sometime around 1975, the peak years of TM initiation, and over the years, many of them have participated in other promotional efforts including running as political candidates under the Natural Law Party banner. (The NLP was a thinly-veiled and ultimately doomed attempt to obtain governmental support and funding for the Transcendental Meditation program by direct involvement in the political process.)

They are examples of exactly how TM was both a product of its times, and a product of the youthfulness of many who were initiated. They're almost instinctively repeating the same tenets and metaphors I first heard back in the mid-70's; rather than accepting and adapting to change - one of the alleged named benefits of TM back in those days - they continue to support TM, almost in defiance of its ineffectiveness relative to their claims, and the devolving of the organization to the point where its leaders express open contempt for, and avoidance of, science and medicine. *

Few, if any, of these "experts" can be described as having been completely independent of the TM organization for most of their adult lives. Most use their practice of TM for more than thirty years as confirmation of TM's efficacy. On the other hand, that could be viewed as evidence of extreme stubbornness in the face of having become involved with an ultimately faith-based program that will never live up to the decades of hype created by its proponents.

I'll go into some detail on the background of all those people described as "researchers," who'll be part of the next David Lynch Foundation event, in my next article here.

* "We are not going to take help from medical Drs. as medical professionals give poison. So don’t engage any medical Drs. for anything—absolutely whatever it is—even if they are in our Movement family" - Kingsley and Leslie Brooks, "Governor Recertification Course Overview of Policies & Procedures May, 2005"

My friend's doctor recommended Transcendental Meditation

My new friend Sherry told me that her M.D. had recently recommended that she learn either Transcendental Meditation or the Relaxation Response to improve her health. Sherry checked out the local TM center, but felt the ambiance there was too "weird and culty" so she decided not to learn TM.

It started me thinking. What would be an appropriate thing to say to a doctor who suggested that their patients learn TM? I have come up with my own answer. Would you like to develop your own response in the "Comments" section? Or, best of all, would you like to edit and improve my little lecture? Maybe together we can come up with an optimum response. Then you could print it out for your doctor if you want to.

To start the ball rolling, here is my first draft:

1) One can learn the Relaxation Response for free from a library book. Learning TM costs $1,500. (Links to websites needed.)

2) Much of the money you give the TM organization (TMO) goes to making the family of the founder wealthy and powerful. (Links to websites needed.)

3) The research on the benefits of TM is flawed. Experimental design is often biased to make TM look good. Outside research shows that other techniques of meditation are effective, but the TMO does not disseminate that information. Some people receive no benefits from TM and occasionally people are harmed by TM, but the TMO does not disseminate that information either. (Links to websites needed.)

4) The TMO encourages TM students to get more deeply involved in the TM world: to spend lots of money on retreats, advanced techniques, TM ayurvedic medicines, TM rituals, TM astrology, etc. Not only can students end up spending lots of money and time on TM products, they are encouraged to assume a lifestyle which can extend to diet, celibacy, what to wear, where to live, what to believe, etc. (Links to websites needed.)

5) Some people may object to the religious nature of TM: its mantras are names of Hindu gods, the ceremony during personal instruction includes praising and bowing down to Hindu gods, and its belief system is contrary to Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Humanism, and probably other religions. There are no religious objections to the Relaxation Response technique. (Links to websites needed.)

Can you help improve upon this first draft?

Transcendental Meditation Wants YOUR Money for Religious Rituals

File this in your "Yes, We Are No Religion" folder, Episode IX—The Guru Strikes Out.

The TM Org is selling special Maharishi Yagya® performances "for the nation."

And they have a special deal for you in March! Just $1,250 to $100,000 each, while supplies last.

If you're not familiar with yagyas, known as yajñas in non-copyrighted Sanskrit, they are Hindu rituals to various gods that involve chanting mantras or verses from the Vedas as Hindu priests pour offerings into a sacrificial fire.

Examples include yagyas to Ganesh, to promote prosperity and removal of obstacles, to Lakshmi, for all forms of spiritual and material progress, and to Shiva, for health and immortality (invincibility), among others.

The TM Org has been selling yagyas, which one can have performed at any local Hindu temple, since at least 1997. For more information, here's my critical article on TM yagyas and here's what the TM Org chooses to reveal.

The Indian branch of the TM Org, led by the Maharishi's lifetime celibate nephew, Brahmchari Girish Verma, offers a little more detail.

(Take a second look at the picture. Doesn't Girish look exactly like the Maharishi? Here's hoping ruthless money-grubbing doesn't run in the Varma gene pool.)

The Indian movement is reported to be splitting with the TM Org based in Europe—taking the Maharishi family fortune with him. This may be triggering the panic the TM Org appears to be in to raise funds.

Here are relevant quotations from TM Admin:

Dear Friends,

Starting on the Day of Lasting Achievements (27th April, 2009) a series of Maharishi Yagya® performances began in India, requested by responsible citizens who have come forward to sponsor Maharishi Yagya performances for their nation. If you wish your country to be included in the Maharishi Yagya performances for the nation, you are invited to contribute to the new set of performances:

From 3rd March to 13th March 2010

.... Every contribution towards the Maharishi Yagya performances for nations is welcome. If your contribution meets a minimum level of $1250.00, your name will be included in the Sankalpa of the Maharishi Yagya performance....

Ned Wynn: The Personal Danger of Teaching Transcendental Meditation

Old-time Transcendental Meditation Initiator Ned Wynn submitted the following article about the dangers he sees for TM Teachers still telling the same old story about the "meaningless" mantras to new initiates.

Many old timers will know of Ned. He was a Teacher Training Teacher for a number of years, teaching on Mallorca, Fiuggi Fonte, and throughout Europe. He has a lot of insider knowledge about the TM Movement—and the Maharishi—back in the day.

Ned left the Movement in 1972, for reasons he explains below.

Can you believe these mantra issues have been hanging over the TM Org's head for more than 40 years—and they haven't undertaken simple, basic reforms to put them behind them?

I warn people today about TM when they ask me my opinion.

Especially about the mantras.

My warning is that teaching these mantras without revealing—to monotheists specifically—that they translate into English, with some variations, "To Lord Shiva, I bow down," could lead to some real trouble for the teachers.

There is danger, personal danger, to teachers of TM should it be discovered by devout Catholics, Jews, Muslims, etc. that the "meaningless" mantra they have been given is in fact a prayer to Shiva.

In today's world of Islamic militancy, for instance, it could lead to the teacher literally being killed. Some of these guys would take their own lives along with the teacher's because of the shame of having sworn fealty to a foreign god.

And for Jews and Christians there is the distinct possibility that there would be some repercussions—though most likely they'd stop short of murder!

Won't they?

I know some committed Christians. I know that they would be horrified at uttering such blasphemous things whenever they said their mantra.

They wouldn't do anything about it in terms of some retaliatory activity, but they would stop meditating using the word(s) they were given. And eventually someone will publish this stuff, and the lack of candor in the teaching won't encourage people to join up.

They don't want to worship pagan gods. It's in direct contravention of the Commandment: Thou shalt have no other God before me. And believe me there are millions of people who take that very seriously.

They feel that their eternal souls are mortally endangered by breaking that Commandment.

Exodus
2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;
3 Do not have any other gods before me.

Christ especially was concerned with two "Great" Commandments (from Matthew).

Mt 22:36
“[Jesus], which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, ’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”

It would be hard to love the Lord your God "with all your heart and soul and mind" if you are also, in your meditation, bowing down to a Hindu god. I am not familiar with the Koran, but I do know that the Muslims abide by the Ten Commandments just like Jews and Christians do.

So, teachers and governors and kings or whatever your foolish titles may be, do not think yourselves protected in some magical way from the danger inherent in the meditation technique you are teaching. There is no magical protection enclosing or safeguarding you.

It's a myth promoted by Mahesh.

It's a con.

The machetes in the hands of those increasingly irritated Brothers of Islam, however, are not mythical, their sharp edges are very real.

And the Brothers are famously not squeamish when it comes to releasing gallons of blood from the bodies of tricksters and pagan shamans.

Plus which, when you get down to it, it's simply dishonest.

How Transcendental Meditation REALLY Works

Corresponding with an emailer recently, it came home to me that many people are not aware of the wealth of material about TM insider teachings already exposed on the Internet. So from time to time, I thought I'd post some golden oldies that TMFB readers may have overlooked.

Linked below is a transcription of "Soma and the Gods" taken from testimony in the Kropinski trial. This videotape is one of a handful that have become infamous in the TM movement because of their secrecy: It is only shown to TM teachers on the heavily regimented Teacher Training Course (TTC). For many years copies of this tape were not even allowed to enter the continental US.

For good reason! Much like the Church of Scientology's OT materials, "Soma and the Gods" lays out the Maharishi's theology in a way that the public is not deemed "ready" for by the TM org.

According to participants in the Kropinski trial, this tape -- along with the entire TTC catalog -- appeared mysteriously on someone's doorstep one day. Since then the tape has been used by plaintiffs in court cases to prove that the TM movement had a religious, specifically Hindu, agenda -- largely because it's one of the few times the Maharishi was captured on tape talking about worshipping the Vedic Gods. (Of course today, the TM movement sells Hindu sacrifices, yagyas or yajnas, to Ganesh, Lakshmi, and other Gods for thousands of dollars without batting an eye! Interestingly, "Post-Vedic yajñas, where milk products, fruits, flowers, cloth and money are offered, are called "yaga"[1], homa or havana," according the Wikipedia link. Sounds a lot like the puja used for TM initiation.)

But the true significance of "Soma and the Gods" is much larger. And the theology that the Maharishi espouses is not Hinduism. It is much more idiosyncratic -- and bizarre.

In a nutshell, the Maharishi describes a parasitic relationship between TMers and the Vedic Gods. TMers produce the magical chemical Soma in their guts -- but it isn't something they can use directly. The Vedic Gods, principally Indra, descend from Heaven and feed on the Soma in the TMers' belly. In return for this primitive relationship, the Gods grant all manner of boons. TMers become successful, happy, prosperous, and develop supernormal abilities.

Unbeknownst to non-TM teachers, the entire TM program can be understood through this simple model.

We practice yogic asanas and pranayama to clear the channels through which Soma will flow. We repeat the name of our own personal "Ishta" (God) to summon Him or Her. Advanced TMers practice the sidhis to "stir" the Soma and further clear channels. We read verses from the Rig Veda's Ninth Mandala that literally invite the Gods by name to feast on the Soma produced in our bodies: "Flow, Soma, in a most sweet and exhilirating stream, effused for Indra to drink.... Be the lavish giver of wealth, most bounteous, the destroyer of enemies, bestow on us the riches of the affluent." And we take Ayurvedic potions and pills believing we will produce "extra" or "more refined" soma.

An anecdote from a former Maharishi International University (MIU/MUM) professor:

On my Governor Training Course, after we had rounded and rounded and rounded for three months, MMY [the Maharishi] finally called to answer our questions. I asked what we should expect from endlessly reading the Ninth Mandala of the Rig Veda and I never forgot his reply: "It will become a living reality."

To my knowledge, this vision is the Maharishi's alone.

The Rig and Sama Vedas themselves describe the process of making a beverage, soma, by grinding and brewing a certain medicinal plant -- or alternatively by feeding a plant to a cow and then imbibing either its milk or urine. James Allegro speculated some years back that soma was actually the hallucinogenic mushroom amanita muscara, a prevalent inebriator among all Aryan cultures. Perhaps. But even in modern day India, there are hotris who perform the Soma sacrifice using the humble soma plant, and imbibing the juice.

Nowhere in all of Vedic literature have we found a single reference to soma as a substance produced in the human stomach and fed upon by Gods. Except in this product of the Maharishi's imagination.

Many sources from the inner circles of the TM movement have already reported on the Maharishi's preoccupation with the influence of other people's thoughts (stress), purity of food (genetic engineering), and apparent preoccupation with "enemies" (re: the CIA and AMA). The unforgettable image of ravening Gods jostling each other to feed at the stomachs of TMers around the world to get their share of the mythical Soma seems a conclusive indication that TM theology may simply be the by-product of the Maharishi's distrubed mind.

A few highlights:

  • It's clear from the legal wrangling that TM's lawyer was struggling to control how the jury perceived "Soma and the Gods." Those familiar with the TM movement recognize this as a movement "tic," never trust the conclusions the "unenlightened" public may draw -- always frame and interpret the Maharishi's words before and after they are presented.
  • It may not be clear from context that "expert witness" John Farrow was a long-time TM/Maharishi devotee, active in the inner circles. The TM-published Collected Papers are littered with his TM-sponsored research.
  • As revealed here, the Maharishi had no legal connection to any TM movement organization -- not as an officer, director, or employee. Nonetheless, he ruled with an iron-hand by force of personality and religious devotion to him personally. (See the TM teacher's oath.)
  • According to the judge, John Farrow acts as a "surrogate" for the Maharishi. Even in formal legal proceedings, the TM movement attempts to frame their theology carefully before hand, "putting the tape in its clearest context," rather than trusting to the unfiltered perception of the jury.
  • Maharishi discusses Hindu devas as "very refined impulses of energy and intelligence" and refers to their finest vibrations as mantras. In the "New Jersey Court Case," the judge labeled this as overtly religious language -- not scientific concept. Most observers of the TM theology see this sort of "shadow speech" as a camouflaged attempt to discuss fundamentalist Hindu religious concepts without offending Western sensibilities.
  • The Maharishi specifically talks about the Hindu God Indra as "that Agency, that force of nature which puts together the mind and the body." By extension, one might surmise that whenever the Maharishi talks about forces or laws of nature, that he is referring to the Gods. In fact, this equation is made explicitly for TM teachers and other insiders.
  • Finest impulses of life: Another familiar TM/Maharishi substitution for "Gods."

Transcendental Meditation: Look Quick before Link Disappears

UPDATE: Sure enough, the link is down. What are they afraid of? Cowards! Videos back up. Must have been transient problem. Password protection was added to the site about an hour after this post, however.

You never know what you will find in your email.

Here are two links to (mildly) secret videos on the web site dedicated to "Resource Materials for Certified Teachers of the Transcendental Meditation Technique": Governor's Chat, December 7, 2009 and Governor's Chat, May 24, 2009.

Wow! Do these look creepy or what?

That's a frame grab of "Raja John Hagelin." Yes, the same "world-renowned physicist" splattered across the Internet with his introductory talks on TM and Quantum Physics. Usually appearing in coat and tie -- sans the Burger King crown.

Show these at your next PTA. I imagine the question of TM in the public schools will evaporate rather quickly.

Better peek quick, I don't imagine these links will remain up once we've published them.

There are some interesting nuggets in these bland-enough-to-be-disturbing videos. Here are some initial thoughts from TMFB editor, Mike Doughney:

December observations: Hagelin says initiations increased 149 percent.

May observations: Hagelin says initiations in the past were down to 100/month.

This means they're now up to 149/month, right? :) What about those million "at-risk" kids, they don't figure into this (or exist for that matter).

The other thing on the May tape is Hagelin explicitly going over the Vedic revivalist and millenarian stuff that I talked about in my blog post on November 23. Again, great to see it in his own words.

One of our editors hope to go into more analysis in a few days, but I wanted to rush this out for your perusal before it disappeared -- forever!

Transcendental Meditation Goal: Religious Gov't for Every Nation

I thought about making this another installment in "Yes, We Are No Religion." But given the wave of religious fundamentalism sweeping the world — leading to hatred, death, and war — I thought it important to pass on this disturbing message minus the snark.

Dear Friends,

The spiritual counterpart for your country lies in India. Each country is connected to one of the twelve jyotir lingas in India, the seat of Shiva, the eternal silence at the basis of creation. Reviving the age-old knowledge about the spiritual connection of every country with the Jyotirlingas in India and the creation of 48 Brahmananda Saraswati Nagars is Maharishi¹s greatest gift for humanity. The following website gives you more information about Maharishi's global plan to transform every country into a Vedic country:

http://www.mgcwp. org/jyotir_ ling/POWERPOINT/ JYOTIRLING. htm

You are cordially invited in Maharishi¹s global plan to create a Vedic society everywhere and enjoy Maharishi¹s blessings and the support of all the Laws of Nature. If you have any questions or you want to participate in this grand undertaking please contact us via GlobalCountrySwitze rland@maharishi. net.

Bowing before Maharishi and the Holy Tradition of Vedic Masters we send you our best wishes for life in fulfilment.

Jai Guru Dev

[Emphasis added.]

Since the late 60s, the Transcendental Meditation movement has claimed not be a religion or religious — despite conclusive evidence to the contrary. Based on that claim, they promoted TM as a secular practice to the public, which in turn has led to TM being adopted in public schools, the justice system, the military, research publications — even receiving government funds. For reasons best known to TM leaders, they base their claims to be nonreligious on a distinction between Vedism and Hinduism — a distinction without a difference, similar to distinguishing between Early Christianity and Modern Christianity. Both are religions, one based on the other.

My suspicion is TM simply hopes to confuse people who don't understand what the Vedas are.

Just as the ultimate goal of some Christian Fundamentalists is to make the U.S. — and ultimately all nations — horribly repressive "Christian" theocracies, the TM Movement's goal is to bring Hindu/Vedic rule to the entire world. Replete with Horse Sacrifices, Shiva worship, a return to monarchy, and a tyrannical morality that punishes the exercise of freedoms the developed world is based on: religion, sexuality, democracy, so many others.

I suspect this was the Maharishi's goal for a very long time, perhaps from the beginning.

When you hear of Transcendental Meditation being taught to public school children, invading the justice/prison system, publishing questionable research, and receiving taxpayer funds from your government, I hope you will think of this internal memo from one of TM's "Global Countries."

I hope this message will be shared with every person with an interest in the separation between Church and State, with school-age children — and, especially, anyone working to stem the tide of fundamentalist-fueled hatred, violence, and tyranny. It's my especial hope it will be shared with the ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, religious leaders, and the press.

If you have any such contacts, would you pass on this post?

Please note that, although there is no copyright accompanying this email, in the US any creative work is assumed to be copyrighted by its author(s) and is subject to legal protection.

I present the entire text of this email in the belief it conforms to the Fair-Use Exception granted to news, critical, educational, and satirical works.

It's just too important to publicize this message — and tear the mask off Transcendental Meditation's claims to be not religious.

Yes, We Are No Religion -- Part 9,999

Can you think of another science that performs puja to the Hindu god Ganesh? Yet the "scientific" Transcendental Meditation performs this traditional Hindu sacrament to "remove obstacles" -- if you can afford the thousands they charge as a fee.

Wow! Can you imagine how rich physicist Stephen Hawking would be if he charged for a little ritual before he made his latest pronouncement on dark matter?

I wonder if public school children who participate in David Lynch's TM Quiet Time program will be given handy reminders like this one I received via email yesterday?

Cover Article on Transcendental Meditation in the Public Schools

The recent push by the TM Org and David Lynch to teach Transcendental Meditation in public schools has really grabbed the attention of Americans United for Separation of Church & State. Their current issue of Church & State features a cover story as well as supporting articles on the controversial program.

Definitely worth a read. And if you're so inspired, you might consider a donation to AU to support their anticipated court challenge to TM in public schools.

Transcendental Meditation Wants YOU to Contribute for Hindu Rituals

Yet another anonymous contribution by a TMFB reader.

And yet more proof TM is no religion!

I'm having a hard time with the thought that the more the TM Organization publicizes and markets, the more readers TMFB will gain.

Note that, far from backing away from the Hindu Yagya (yajna) program, Transcendental Meditation is going high profile. Perhaps a reader can help me sort out the logic of that at the same time they are claiming not to be a religion in order to sneak TM into public schools?

National Maharishi Yagya® Performances
to Create a Vedic Civilization in Your Country
Laying the Foundation for Heaven on Earth

Starting on the Day of Lasting Achievements (27th April, 2009) a series of Maharishi Yagya performances has begun in India, requested by responsible citizens who have come forward to sponsor National Maharishi Yagya performances for their country. If you wish your country to progress, you are invited to participate in creating an ideal Vedic civilization which brings peace, prosperity, health and happiness to all your people. One inspired individual may be enough to enlighten the whole country. For those countries that have found supporters new sets of National Maharishi Yagya performances commence on:

1. 23rd June to 3rd July 2009 (first set)
2. 9th July to 19th July 2009 (second set)

Contributing to the Maharishi Yagya performance makes you the instrument through which the effects of the Maharishi Yagya program flow to your country. This also makes you a participant in Maharishi’s global plan to create Heaven on Earth and gives you the rare opportunity to accumulate life-supporting effects for your own life in a more holistic way.

Vedic Civilization is based on both Knowledge and Action for Maximum Progress of Individual and Nation
Progress walks on two feet: rest and activity. The resting foot provides a firm basis on which the other foot can move ahead. The Transcendental Meditation program gives the experience of transcendental consciousness and provides deep rest to mind and body, which creates the basis for maximum and successful activity in ordinary waking state. As the mind is experiencing deeper and deeper levels of consciousness knowledge increases until, on the level of pure consciousness, total knowledge (the Veda) is cognized. It is the power of knowledge, Gyanshakti (Gyan = knowledge, Shakti = power) which pulls the mind in the inward direction, in a process that is automatic and spontaneous.

This level of total knowledge is the seat of all the Laws of Nature, which makes it a field of all possibilities. From this field of all possibilities action arises that manifests the next step of progress in accord with all the Laws of Nature. The outward direction of the mind is also automatic and spontaneous and is brought about by the power of action, Kriyashakti (Kriya = action, Shakti = power).

Maharishi’s Global Plan for an Ideal Administration is Based on both Gyanshakti and Kriyashakti

Maharishi has designed his ideal global administration in accordance with the Vedic principles for maximum progress and success, consisting of two branches representing Gyanshakti and Kriyashakti.

Maharishi’s global plan for an ideal administration is based on the establishment of large groups of Vedic Pandits who through their Vedic Yagya performances and their Yogic Flying enliven Gyanshakti, the power of knowledge, in world consciousness. To increase the effectiveness of these groups of Vedic Pandits, they will be placed in strategic points in India: In the Brahmasthan of India which is the center of India and the Global Capital of Raam Raj; in the twelve Jyotirlingas in India, the seats of Shiva, the eternal silence of pure consciousness; and in the 48 Brahmananda Saraswati Nagars that are connected with the 12 Jyotirlingas and which Maharishi has named in honor of his enlightened teacher, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati.. To further spread the power of knowledge, teams ofMaharishi Vedic SM Pandits covering all areas of Vedic knowledge—such as Yoga, Jyotish, Ayurveda, Sthapatya Veda, etc.—along with a bigger group of Maharishi Vedic Pandits skilled in Maharishi Yagya performances will be deployed in all the 192 countries around the world.

The Vedic knowledge enlivened by Gyanshakti, the power of knowledge, forms the basis on which Kriyashakti, the power of action, can build a Vedic civilization, every aspect of which is permeated by Vedic principles. For this purpose Maharishi has trained responsible and devoted citizens in Vedic principles and techniques and had them crowned as Rajas, the Vedic rulers of society. As his last wish Maharishi asked the Rajas for a gift, his Guru ‘Dakshin.’ He asked them to build Towers of Invincibility in every country—a home for Vedic Pandits, a home for Gyanshakti—where all areas of Vedic knowledge would be vibrant for all times to come. When Gyanshakti and Kriyashakti are both working together hand in hand and in mutual harmony, progress for the individual and for the nation is maximum, thereby creating Heaven on Earth.

An Invitation to Support your Country by Contributing to the National Maharishi Yagya Program
Every contribution is welcome. If your contribution meets a minimum level of $1,250.00, your name will be included in the Sankalpa of the Maharishi Yagya performance. In this case you may select one of the Maharishi Yagya performance purposes listed on the donation form to be part of the Sankalpa. Also, you may have the performance done for any country of your choice. The Maharishi Yagya performance purposes listed on the donation form are part of the National Maharishi Yagya program and do not require a Comprehensive Life Kundali or Maharishi Yagya performance recommendation.. They enhance life in a general way in the direction indicated by those purposes. However, they do not replace planetary Maharishi Yagya performances for the individual to protect one from harmful influences, or special Maharishi Yagya performances to promote specific desires. For such individual-specific purposes, please contact your national Maharishi Jyotish services coordinator or Maharishi Yagya program office. Please feel free to share this knowledge and forward this email to your relatives and friends. Anyone who would like to join the mailing list for the National Maharishi Yagya performances and other Maharishi Jyotish and Maharishi Yagya services can do so at this link: www.yagya.org

More Proof TM Is NOT a Religion

I usually just post my snide comment, "Yes, We Are No Religion!" But this is getting embarassing! I wonder if all those kids about to learn Transcendental Meditation in public schools will also get a special deal on TM-powered yagyas?

If you've never heard of a yagya, it is a Hindu ritual in which special mantras are said or thought by a Hindu Brahmin to specific gods to improve the life of the person paying for the ritual.

For instance, want wealth? You can buy a yagya from the TM Org to invoke goddess Lakshmi's grace. Want to remove an obstacle? The elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is your man. Sorrow or lack of spiritual progress? You need serpent-necklaced Shiva.

The TM Movement isn't the only place you can buy a yagya, however. Pretty much any Hindu temple will do one far cheaper. (Here's an interesting Web site selling yagyas.)

At any rate, here's a new email sent to the TM faithful urging them to purchase a yagya on an astrologically propitious date.

Perhaps I should change my comment to, "Yes, We Are No Science"?

Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious days in the Vedic calendar to start new initiatives and undertakings. It happens once a year about this time.
Jai Guru Dev

Akshaya Tritiya to Bring Lasting Achievements
Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most important days in the Vedic Calendar. On this day, Surya, the sun, and Chandra, the moon, are both exalted. They are the most prominent of all the nine Grahas (planets) and only at this time of the year are they both simultaneously in the state of exaltation, which means the state of greatest brilliance. According to the Vedic texts, this was the day when the ancient Rishis (sages) performed the first Yagya in the history of mankind. This event also marked the beginning of a time, when people lived happily in tune with Natural Law. The special quality of this day is expressed in the word ‘Akshaya’ which means ‘undecaying’ or ‘everlasting’. Maharishi Yagyas performed on this day take advantage of this quality of time. By nourishing any specific Law of Nature through Maharishi Yagya performances, one gains increased support of Nature to help achieve the following desires in a more lasting way:
* To increase wealth
* Removal of resistances and troubles for happiness and health in life and promotion of positive support
* For gaining knowledge
* To increase harmony in married life
* Promoting good fortune; elimination of obstacles and promotion of supportive influence on the basis of the Kundali
* For promoting peace of mind
* To promote spiritual progress
* Support in court case
* For laying a foundation stone; positive influence for a new home; moving into a new home; ground breaking ceremony

Still "not a religion:" Video of puja, the religious ritual central to TM initiation

A video of a group performance of the puja, a central part of TM initiation, is now available as a Google Video. This video, recorded from the TM movement's Maharishi Channel, shows Maharishi Mahesh Yogi leading the ritual in January 2006, with a group of "rajas" of the organization's "Global Government." Each of these "rajas" had generally paid one million dollars each to dress in white robes, wear golden crowns, and at the time this video was recorded, were occasionally physically present with the movement's founder during the last years of his life.

What you'll see in this video differs from TM initiation in that initiations are done in private, with the prospective meditator standing with the initiator performing the ritual. The initiate would have contributed to this ritual by bringing fresh fruit, flowers and a hankerchief beforehand; they would, of course, need to be present for this ritual, and would be encouraged to kneel at the end (which occurs in the video at about 9:40 when all participants bow while seated).

Other elements that can be seen in this video are the same as what an initiate can expect to see before being instructed in the practice of Transcendental Meditation, particularly the puja set and picture seen in front of each participant, the use of incense, flame, water and flowers, the motions of offering various items "to the lotus feet of Shri Guru Dev," and of course the "Holy Tradition," sung in Sanskrit.

The puja and its translation have long been freely available online. To follow along, visit the "TM 'Holy Tradition'" page at Trancenet. For a discussion of the religious meaning of the puja, alternate translations, and an exploration of its source in commonly available scraps of Sanskrit poetry, see "Whose puja is it, anyway?" also at Trancenet. Info on Transcendental Meditation in Public Schools to Share

Following up on my post below, commenter and contributor Ruth made important suggestions on information you can share with the media, educators, friends, and others you believe may be concerned about teaching TM in public schools as a violation of Church and State. We have not yet broken into the mainstream media, but any action you take to make this information viral on the Internet increases the chance that parents, teachers, even legislators learn about the religious nature of the Transcendental Meditation program being taught in public schools:

Here are the addresses, often including email addresses, of each state's department of education.http://wdcrobcolp01.ed.gov/ Progr...category_ID=SEA

You might consider writing the department of education for your state with your concerns. For example you might:

1. Include a translation of the puja. [Here is the TM Movement's sanitized translation. Here is a translation more true to the Sanskrit text, with information on the sources of TM's "puja," which literally means, "worship."]

2. Describe the underlying philosophy of TM as being concerned with matters that are philosophical and religious. For example, you could explain briefly the different states of consciousness, including God Consciousness.

3. You might include a reference to the New Jersey court case [and other court rulings regarding the religious nature of TM].

4. Quotes from MMY's book Science of Being and Art of Living may be appropriate.

5. You might express concern about children's pontential exposure to other techniques that are sold by the TMO, and describe the siddhis and the nature of advance techniques.

5. I believe that other peculiar beliefs promoted by the TMO are in fact relevant to a proper evaluation of TM the technique and its place in the schools. The technique should not be viewed in a vacuum. So, the eastern religious underpinnings are relevant. The "vedic science" claims are relevant. The claims that yogic flyers can create peace. The promotion of yagyas [rituals performed on behalf of TM meditators to Ganesh, Lakshmi, and other Hindu gods] for money. The architecture. The astrology. They all are relevant and are promoted by the same organization that is the only source of the authorized teaching of TM.
